Sweden Ballistics (Swebal), a company developing domestic production of military explosives, is raising an additional SEK 300 million to build a TNT factory in Nora. The investment reflects sustained growth in European demand for ammunition.

The company received approval from the Land and Environment Court in December 2025, with the detailed development plan adopted in January 2026. The latest funding round includes several Swedish investors, among them Thomas von Koch, Karl Engelbrektson and Pär Svärdson.

- It is with pride and gratitude that I welcome these investors, both new and existing. Strengthening defence capability is a core value we share, said Joakim Sjöblom, founder and chief executive of Swebal, in a press release.

TNT (trinitrotoluene) is a critical input in ammunition, including artillery shells, drones and mines. Europe is currently facing supply constraints, driven in part by Russia’s war against Ukraine and wider geopolitical tensions.

- In addition to capital, industrial experience, technical expertise and networks are also essential to establishing the facility, Sjöblom added.

At full operational capacity, the plant is expected to produce more than 4,000 tonnes of TNT annually. It would be Sweden’s first TNT production facility since the 1990s and is intended to reduce Europe’s reliance on imports.

Founded in 2024, Swebal is positioning the Nora facility as a contribution to strengthening resilience across Sweden, Europe and NATO, with the stated aim of supporting deterrence and European security.
